What is abstract art for elementary school children?
Abstract art is the opposite of figurative art (that is, the representation of identifiable objects through recognizable images). Therefore, abstraction does not represent concrete "things" in nature but rather proposes a new reality. It proposes a "pure art" looking beyond our reality.
Materials:
- Adhesive tape for paper. I used masking tape and I had a lot of trouble removing it from the sheet without taking it away. Best washi tape of different widths.
- Tempera paints are better than watercolors, so children don't need to soak them in water to change color. Washable tempera is always better, since we will end up with paint everywhere. I used 6 different basic colors.
- White sheet. Enough size for two artists to paint without getting in each other's way.
- Brushes of different types and sizes: I used fine brushes, spatulas, thick brushes, etc. And they were choosing which one to paint with.
